As a lifelong New Englander, I can’t help but see September as a beautifully anticipatory month. We all know the colors are coming, the air starts to carry a chill, and we start carrying jackets. Earlier today, in an adult version of school supply shopping, I bought a beautiful simple journal in which to begin (again!) The Artist’s Way.
I love this month: the quiet it brings to this little city and its ability to gently stoke the fire of routine.
But … before I let the summer go, I’d like to note some of the season’s highlights - as a way to ensure them a longer shelf life in my memory palace, and maybe to remind you not to forget the sweetness of your summer.
Here’s what I loved doing:
Watching our family grow (gathering haycorns with my granddaughter and welcoming her sister into the fold)
Attending the Santa Fe Opera with my sisters and being equally awed by the music and the architecture
Learning from a chance encounter with a retired academic who told me about launching her art-focused travel business after a 30-year career
Watching a vivid and spectacular shooting star bisect Maine’s night sky
Attending Ontario’s Shakespeare Festival with longtime friends (and fellow ND Humanities grads)
Engaging in the kind of work I most love: 30 patient interviews for a hospital
I hope you did something special this summer. I’d love to hear about it!
